DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR LD HAWKERS

Lahad Datu District Council (LDDC) has decided to extend the deadline for hawkers at the Sedco Complex here to move into the new hawkers centre near the minibus terminal after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri in September this year.

This was decided during the second round meeting-cum-dialogue conducted by the LDDC with more than 60 hawkers from both Sedco complex and Mawar road, which was held at Dewan Tun Mustapha here Sunday night.

Besides this, the developer of the new hawkers centre, Meei Lee Enterprise Sdn Bhd also appointed Napagang Hope Sdn Bhd (NHSB) as its management company; NHSB Director Leong Kwok Hing also accepted the hawkers' request and reduced the stall rental from RM450 to RM300 per month.

The rental will be collected by the company's personnel on a daily basis to reduce the hawkers' financial burden.

The hawkers had earlier requested for their monthly rental, which include licence fee, security, electricity and water supply to be reduced to RM50, besides allowing them to operate their business at Sedco Complex every Saturday and Sunday. However, this was rejected.

District Officer, Zulkifli Nasir who chaired the meeting said the Council will not stop any hawker who wants to move into the new centre and start business immediately.

However, he advised all hawkers to register with the Council soon as possible to avoid their quota being taken away by new applicants.

He also warned that all hawkers must move into the new centre three days after Hari Raya, failing which the council will take stern action against those who fail or refuse to comply with the relocation.

He explained that the Council will have to take firm action against the defiant hawkers in view of the fact that the banks and business operators in the vicinity have made numerous complaints to the relevant authorities, including the Public Complaint Bureau in the Prime Minister Department.

The hawker centralisation exercise was to pave way for the Palma Square project in Sedco Complex, as part of its half-a-million ringgit beautification project. He was convinced that once completed, the project will bring about common benefit to all, as it will enhance the requirement for the District Council to be upgraded into a Municipal Council.

Meanwhile, Silam Member of Parliament Salleh Kalbi's representative, Mohd Yusof Jiran and Silam Barisan National Secretary, councillor Kassim Sulaiman who represented Lahad Datu Assemblyman Datuk Nasrun Mansor, advised hawkers to obey the relocation move.

Also present at the dialogue were the Council's Licensing Committee Chairman, Councillor Abdul Malik Aidala, Enforcement Unit Assistance Chief, Aliudin Miasin, Health and Environment Unit Chief, Marcus Pehang.
