THE Sabah DAP Local government and Housing Bureau Chief, Edward Ewol Mujie inspected a complaint received by the KK MP office that there are illegal squatters housing being built next to the Hakka Building in Likas, Kota Kinabalu.

The people fears that the squatter colony will grow in size and eventually they will create social and security problems in the area, especially to the high class new apartment/residential flat near by.

Edward investigated and spoken to the some of the dwellers of the illegal squatters and found out that there are all together 6 families comprising of 30 over family members. To his surprise, many of them are MyKad holders and that is to say they are local Sabahan squatting in illegal squatters house which are incidentally situated in the boundary of the Sabah Kota Kinabalu Bird Sanctuary in Likas. That is government land. They also said they have no water and electricity supply.

Edward advice them to move out and the easiest way is for them to seek help from the LPPB (Government low cost housing commission) and to apply for low cost housing either on rented or purchase basis. There are available units ready for application in the LPPB office.

It is high time that these families have to move out and find lodgings else way before the authorities come to demolish the illegal squatter houses.

These people are among the urban hardcore poor, why the authorities did not border to assist them. This was claimed by one of the family. Edward hopes this would raise the attention of the relevant departments to visit these families and provide them with the necessary assistance to bring them out from poverty.
