INVESTIGATION PAPER ON AKJAN OPENED

POLICE have opened an investigation paper under section 505 (b) of the Penal Code and section 28 of the Internal Security Act (ISA) on Datu Mohd Akjan Datu Ali Muhammad for installing himself as and claiming to be the ‘Sultan of Sulu’.

Sabah Police Commissioner Dato’ Haji Hamza Taib said the investigation would be carried out immediately following the police reports lodged by three political parties here last Friday.

“We will study all the reports and will carry out an investigation immediately,” he disclosed when contacted yesterday.

It was widely reported that Akjan, who is the Sabah Islamic Welfare and Sermon Organisation of Malaysia chairman, had installed himself as the 33rd reigning Sultan of Sulu on Feb 2, when he took the oath of allegiance in a private ceremony at Kg Likas here.

It was said that the ceremony was witnessed by a group of 60 people including senior officials of the so-called Sulu sultanate.

Following the installation, Akjan now holds the title of Paduka Maulana Al-Sultan Sharif Ali Muhammad Pulalun or Sultan Hashim Shariful-II.

The unilateral proclamation by Akjan as the reigning sultan had provoked storms of disapproval by certain parties and had urged the police to immediately carry out an investigation.

The majority of Sabahans had been worried that Akjan’s action to declare himself on Malaysian soil as sultan of Sulu would have serious security implications to the state and country.

Some viewed Akjan’s self-styled coronation in Sabah as a challenge to the state and an insult to the King and the Head of State.

Others were concerned the event may be misinterpreted by foreigners from the Philippines to further encourage them to enter Sabah illegally.

Following a statement made by Hamza that an investigation could only be initiated after police had received a report against Akjan, three political parties, namely the Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), lodged separate police reports at the City Police Headquarters at Karamunsing on Friday urging the police to immediately carry out an investigation against Akjan.
