STORM IN THE CUP SSA EXPLODED

DISSATISFIED with the manner its recent 10th Biennial General Meeting (BGM) cum election was conducted, several members of the Sabah Shooting Association (SSA) Kota Kinabalu Branch have lodged an official complaint with the Registrar of Societies (ROS), seeking for its immediate intervention for a fresh BGM cum election.

They noted that the said written complaint was submitted to the ROS office here, on 30 March, 2011.

A police report was also lodged by one of the members, one day earlier, over the alleged irregularities in the conduct of the BGM cum election.

Among the alleged irregularities cited included that the said BGM cum election held on 27 March at the Lokawi Indoor Range, was conducted without a proper notice from the Central Committee, and the eligibility of the voters was not verified, thus resulting in associate (Rela)/non members and members whose membership has expired were allowed to vote. This, they said had clearly contravened its constitution.

“Upon noticing this, several members immediately objected to it but it was not entertained by the incumbent chairman who adamantly proceeded with the BGM cum election,” noted the Group’s spokesperson, Wong Siong Chew.

He further claimed that the agendas of the meeting were not properly completed as a majority of the members were tired of waiting and had decided to go home.

“The meeting was supposed to start at 6pm but it dragged on until almost 8pm, simply because the incumbent chairman was making a lengthy speech glorifying himself and blaming others to cover up his own shortcomings. By the time the incumbent committee started distributing the voting slips to the members, it was past 10pm,” he claimed.

Of the Eight Agendas, only four were actually completed. This included to confirm the Minutes of the previous BGM; to consider matters arising out of the minutes; to receive the Branch Committee’s Report; to approve branch statement of account and to elect the new Branch Committee for the next two years.

Those Agendas which currently still hang in balance included, to receive and approve the audited accounts; to elect an Internal Auditor; to elect delegates for the forthcoming Biennial Delegates Conference; and to consider any other business of which due notice has been given.

They were especially concerned with the status of its accounts citing that its final reports was not attached (some pages missing) and the balance in the bank account too was not mentioned during the meeting.

Besides this, they also alleged that the association was being run by the incumbent chairman, Lo Vun Vui like his own family business, all these years. Lo has helmed the association for the past 12 years.

They further claimed that all these while Lo had been purchasing the ammunitions for the Association from one single suppliers, without securing any quotations from the other suppliers.

Though Lo managed to retain his chairmanship in the much-detested BGM cum election by defeating his sole contender, Ho Wai Kong, they maintained that Lo’s victory was questionable and invalid. Lo polled 61 votes out of the 111 votes cast to beat Ho who polled 50 votes. There was one spoilt vote.

Results of the other contestants too were very marginal of one vote and the Treasurer and Assistant Captain was a tie. By then almost all the attendees had gone home. Until today, the official results for the election have not been announced.

The disgruntled group also said they planned to lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), over the alleged irregularities in its accounts keeping and procurements. However, Lo could not be reached for comment on this.
