TRANSFORMING COMPETENT MANAGERS

IS succession planning in place and working out well in your organization? Have you examined your process to attract and develop your future managers and leaders?

These are but just two key issues that have been identified by Datuk Haji Safari Manan as being the major concerns of current leaders and managers with regard to ensuring relevancy and sustainability of the socio economic development programmes and efforts undertaken by both the public and private sector in Sabah.

Haji Safari, who is a Director of Pembangunan Samudera (S) Sdn Bhd (PSSSB), stressed that vital to the issues of relevancy and sustainability is the matter of leadership.

In announcing the one-day ‘Transformational Leadership Programme’ which is to be held for the first time is Sabah by Leadership Resources (M) Sdn Bhd in collaboration with PSSSB this April 19 at Shangri-la’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa, Haji Safari said: “The feedback that we have received from decision makers and top management is that although the right leadership is widely accepted as a fundamental need for the continued success of an organisation, serious and conscious efforts towards leadership development and clear succession planning are neither in place nor actively pursued by many public and private sector organisations.”

According to Haji Safari, the tendency is to accept that job talent and seniority are the assurance to promotion to managerial and leadership positions and roles.

He described the Transformational Leadership Programme as a proven leadership process with a series of several concurrent process and tools-oriented training and development work sessions.

It is drawn from the world’s greatest leadership minds and give leaders world-class proven content, processes, and tools found with FranklinCovey’s flagship leadership development program: ‘Leadership Greatness’: Building Great Leaders, Great Team, and Great Results.

Chief Minister, Datuk Musa Haji Aman is expected to officiate at the launching of the programme as well as deliver a keynote address.

“To underscore the call of The Right Honourable, The Chief Minister of Sabah towards meeting the challenges of generating vigorous growth and development under the Sabah Development Corridor and the Halatuju (Development Agenda) spearheaded by him, we need able captains,” Haji Safari said.

“This is the opportunity to see how we can turn competent managers into outstanding leaders who can tackle the issue of delivery by the horns and make an impact on the key results areas.”

“In supporting and complimenting the government towards that realization, it is hoped that this programmme can spur renewed interest and dynamic focus on leadership development among the public and private sectors in Sabah.”

Haji Safari further said that The Transformational Leadership would be consistent with the Government Transformational Programme of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and also his 1Malaysia, People First policy, which is also keenly pursued by Musa.

The Programme will be conducted by Michael Simpson, a Senior Consultant and Executive Coach for FranklinCovey’s Global leadership & Execution Practice based in the United States.
