SUN SHEDDING CANVAS CAUSE DOUBLE TROUBLE

DANGER?.....John Lee pointing at some canvas sun shed in KK town.

THE sun shedding canvas used by shops in Kota Kinabalu have received the notice served to them recently warning the business operators to either remove or apply for advertisement license from the DBKK as according to the Advertisement By-law 3 (1) of the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).

According to the letter of notice issued by the DBKK under the reference number BPL: 1100-23/0/1 klt.29, it specifically mentioned that they give the business owners 7 days to move or take down the sun sheds with advertisement printed on it or else these will be compounded.

They also said if the owners do not remove, DBKK will remove for them and the cost will be charge to the owners. The other reason given is on promoting a better look to the KK City.

There are estimated many thousands of such canvas sun sheds used hanging in front of the KK shops starting from KK town centre to as far as Telipok and Petagas.

The shop owners and business operators filed their dismay and complaints to the Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament office together with the copies of the notice from the DBKK.

They strongly objected that the move of the DBKK, and they said this is highly unreasonable and not logical and it is far over board. They see no reason that the canvas sun sheds with name of shop and some advertisement printed on them are to be removed or taken down.

The people said these had been used for a long time over a long period since the Second World War, and there is the necessity for the use of sun shed. The shop owners normally need the sun shed to shed the sun light from penetrating into the shop which created heat and the sun light can also damage their goods on sale.

These sun sheds with name of shop and advertisement printed on it are usually sponsored and supplied free by the products companies.

They said if DBKK insists them to take it down and forced them to pay for the license fees and if DBKK intends to give the KK City a good look, DBKK should provide and supply them with some beautiful sun sheds printed with beautiful Sabah sceneries to show our valued tourists.

The question of taking it down is definitely out of the question and this is a compulsory item needed for the shops to shed the sun. If DBKK insists to force them, they would request the City Mayor to come to their coffee shops to sit under the hot sun to see how he feels.

The Sabah DAP assistant Publicity chief John Lee went around the City to see for himself the situation of the Canvas sun shed and found the complaints are valid. John said there is absolutely no urgency for the shops to remove their sun shed, but he agrees that the dirty and untidy sun sheds are in need to be renewed and cleaned up.

If the product companies can jointly produce some sun shed with beautiful Sabah scenery so as to promote the local tourism industries, this will be the best idea instead of forcing the shop owners to remove them. John said the Ministry of Tourism should come in to help too, and this is part of their responsibility too.

John urges the DBKK to come up with a plan to make our KK City more presentable and give some good and practical ideas to uplift the face look of the KK city. They should not just by forcing the poor shop Keepers to pay license fees and force them to take down the needed sun shed.
