STALL FOR GAYA CHRISTMAS

THE GAYA Christmas Celebration 2011 organising committee is inviting hawkers to set up stall at Gaya Street for the forthcoming carnival this December 12 until 15.

They would be teaming up with stall owners from the various Christian churches to line both sides of Gaya Street during the four-day event, said co-chairman, Neil Mah after a main organising committee meeting at Kota Kinabalu City Hall (Tuesday) today.

Intending hawkers would have to pay the normal daily fee to KK City Hall and comply with the various terms and conditions as set out by KK City Hall.

Neil however said that stall owners should refrain from selling items or gimmicks that go against the teachings of Christianity, such as idols or party props that have horns as part of their features.

‘’The organisers, the Sabah Churches Council, retain the right to prohibit sales of items that are deemed offensive to any community, or even request the stall holder to cease operations, if they persist in flouting the rules,’’ said Neil.

All hawker stall operators who have confirmed their participation have been advised to attend a final briefing at the main stage at Lintasan Deasoka at 4pm on Sunday as well as to find out their location.

Members of the public who want to take part in the hawker stalls, can contact City Hall’s Christina Powen at Tel: 088 244 000 for further details and/or registration.

Meanwhile, Joannes Solidau, City Hall’s Deputy Director (Operations), said the four-day carnival would be a litter-free event and as such, hawkers and visitors should take extra care in disposing their rubbish carefully and properly.

“Ample rubbish bins will be placed at strategic locations for which we hope that the public will use, instead of littering indiscriminately, saying offenders can be fined on the spot if caught red handed,’’ said Joannes.

He also reminded stallholders to dispose their rubbish at the giant bins or to take it back with them.

Joannes also said members of the public are invited to attend all or any one of the four days that the Gaya carnival is being held, promising a jam-packed and exciting programme for young and old.

The stalls from Block A to Block C would see hawkers be selling cooked food, Christmas cakes and cookies, festive decorations, gift items, clothings etc.

Activities at the main stage would include choir groups performing carols, dances, skits among others. Carolling singing by church groups would also be held at Gaya Street.
