FALLEN LAMP POSTS

IT IS A record that there are all together 45 lamp posts being hit by cars from the Kapayan to Lok Kawi along the highway. The lamp poles are either knocked out shape, position, bend, fallen and totally disappeared.

This was observed by the KK MP Hiew King Cheu while going for a visit to Lok Kawi. Hiew said the lamp posts are being constantly hit or bulldozed off the ground by speeding cars or trucks that went out of control along the high way. To date he counted some 45 numbers were damaged and lost, and with some sitting on the road and centre island.

The main caused of these lamp posts being hit easily is because of the place and position where they are planted. The cars can not miss it, if the car had lost control. These lamp posts are planted right in the middle of the highway and there is nothing in between to stop the car from hitting it. The lamp post has even become a ‘stopper’ for the lost control car.

MP Hiew said he couldn’t understand why the authorities especially the JKR do not think of a better way to ensure protect these lamp posts being hit by cars. The losses on repairing and replacing them are very expensive, and until now we see no action has been taken to redo the 45 pieces of lamp posts that has been damaged.

It will be logical to plant the lamp posts in some save position and avoid being hit by cars. It is commonly seen that in Kota Kinabalu City, there are many fallen lamp posts not being replaced and left empty along the road. The new artistic black colored lamp posts had been knocked off in many places too.

The other question is why in KK the frequency of the lamp posts being knocked off is that high? Is there any measure to protect them from being knocked off or damaged? This is some thing for the authorities to really think and search into on how to protect our street light and lamp posts.
