JEFFREY NEVER OFFERED OLIVE BRANCH

PARTI Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Vice President, Datuk Herbert Timbun Lagadan has refuted the claim by STAR Sabah that PBS offered an olive branch to Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

“PBS has never extended an olive branch to Dr Jeffrey nor had the party ever coaxed him to return to PBS. It was a clever maneuvering by Jeffrey to get PBS branch leaders in Tambunan to propose and support his re-entry into PBS,” the Kadamaian assemblyman said in a statement.

Herbert was responding to STAR Sabah information chief Edward Linggu’s statement on Thursday in which the latter said, “if Jeffrey is indeed cunning and irrelevant, why would PBS extend the olive branch on at least three occasions and try to coax and persuade him to return to PBS?

According to Herbert, Edward should be able to recall how Jeffrey’s return into PBS almost resulted in the break-up of the PBS leadership.

The heated contest between Yunuf and Jeffrey was testimony to this and solid proof that Jeffrey was never offered an ‘olive branch’ reception into PBS, the Assistant Minister of Community Service and Consumer Affairs said.

“I am sure Edward can still remember clearly why he and four others followed Jeffrey and deserted PBS in 1999. Was it not an effort to give Jeffrey a strong bargaining power to be appointed as Chief Minister of Sabah?

“Did Edward follow Jeffrey to join BN to fight for Sabah rights for personal gains? As far as we would all recall, Jeffrey has never in the past joined Barisan Nasional (BN) to fight for Sabahan rights. In fact in 1994, he abandoned PBS and his Borneonization struggle to join BN in pursuit of a dangling carrot, that is, the Chief Minister’s post,” Herbert claimed.

If indeed Jeffrey’s intention was to dethrone BN and fight for Sabah rights, why can’t he team up with Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Panglima Yong Teck Lee? Asked Herbert, adding “why must he (Jeffrey) hold the leadership of a party to fight for Sabahan rights?

“Is this not clear proof that Jeffrey’s real motive is to get the Chief Minister’s post? I am least surprised when Edward chose to be in STAR because that would be his only chance to be a candidate in the coming election,” he claimed.

According to Herbert, Jeffrey was a leader in PKR and a strong supporter of the party which made a promise to uphold Sabah rights but why did he abandon the house that he loves and which has provided him refuge for so many years?

To him, it appeared that Jeffrey and Edward’s motives as well as agenda are not crystal clear and as far as party commitment is concerned, it seems that both Jeffrey and Edward have similar problems in being faithful.

“How did Edward know that Jeffrey’s joining Umno was to destabilise the party when Edward was still in PBS then,” he questioned, adding that Jeffrey was very confident to get the Chief Minister’s post after five PBS state assemblymen joined him in PBRS.

Jeffrey, he said, saw it fit to jump on the bandwagon of Borneonization as his platform to return to active politics after he abandoned PKR. (theborneopost)
