JUMP FROM EDGE OF SPACE

A DAREDEVIL has plunged from the edge of SPACE to Earth in a heart-stopping new stunt. Felix Baumgartner carried out a key test flight yesterday, jumping 71,581ft from a craft down to Roswell in New Mexico, US.

Felix's final Red Bull-sponsored jump in July will see him plummet 121,440ft to Earth.

But this latest test has already smashed his previous best record jump of 30,000ft.

He said: "I like the challenge, I have a passion for aviation. I love working on things that start from scratch."

Austrian Felix, 42, reached about 365mph and fell for three minutes and 43 seconds before he opened his parachute at 7,890ft.

The launch window for the staggering 120,000ft jump starts in July in New Mexico.

A spokesman for the stunt said: "The height of Felix's test flight was significant, as it was the first time he passed the Armstrong Line of approximately 63,000ft.

"That is where the atmospheric pressure truly tests his custom-made space suit."

The record for the highest free fall has been held for over half a century by American Air Force test pilot Joe Kittinger.

In 1960 he descended from 102,800 feet. (thesun.co.uk)
