KK HAVE FOUL SEWERAGE OVERFLOWED

THE RESIDENTS in the many housing estates in Kota Kinabalu complained to the Sabah DAP KK Member of Parliament Office concerning the serious overflowing of the foul raw sewerage from the manholes which filled up the open drains. They have repeatedly complained to the DBKK sometimes slow or no action taken.

The residents said the smell is getting to their nerve and really made them angry. They said it is very unhygienic with so much dirty foul water everywhere. They said it is impossible for the DBKK and the Ministry of Health not knowing the situation, and especially they are slow to resolve the matter and leaving it unattended for such a long time. The people complained to them, and they also said we will look into it.

The Sabah DAP Local Government and Housing Bureau Chief Edward Ewol Mujie with his assistant Stephen Yaman went on site to check on the few situations where there is sewerage water overflowing, and found the complaints are valid. It is true that the situation is really bad. It is foul smell everywhere.

There should be some immediate action to be taken to stop the overflow. According to the initial findings, it is due to the sewerage pumps which had broken down in some of the sewerage pump stations, and there is no more pumping away of the sewerage water, which in turn caused the overflow. The reason that caused the pumps to fail may be due to the under capacity, overworked, too old, and too much rubbish got into the pump sump causing the pumps to jam up.

Edward recommended that the situation on the broken pumps must be put right and replaced, and they should use some temporary pumps to pump away the foul water when there is a break down. The DBKK should replace all those small pumps to bigger pumps to enable efficiency and durability. It is essential to ensure that no foul water flow out to the open drains.

In Kota Kinabalu City there are many places where raw sewerage water is constantly flowing into the open drains. That is why we see black water in all the storm drains and giving out foul smell. What is the JKR and DBKK going to do about it?

Our city is polluted, and including the sea where blackish water flows into every day. It is no use to talk about how clean and how nice the city is, but the real fact is that we are living among the 'SHIT'! A garden city should not look like this. This is especially so when the new Sadong Jaya Sembulan Riverside Walk which is surrounded on both sides by smelly black foul water.
