RM150 MILLION FOR 'INVISIBLE' IRRIGATION?

DAP Sabah welcome the call by Agriculture & Agro-based Industry Minister Dato Seri Noh Omar to develop Kota Belud into our rice bowl.

Junz Wong DAP Sabah assistant secretary said that Dato Seri Noh has expressed belief that the rice bowl programme in Kota Belud would materialize by improving the irrigation system while Deputy Chief Minister Dato Seri Yahya Hussin expressed optimism that Kota Belud would be able to double its paddy output following the rice bowl programme.

Junz would like to ask the ministers if his memories served him well, there was a RM150 million upgrading of irrigation system program being implemented in 2009-2010 Kota Belud paddy fields barely 3years ago.

"What is the result with RM150 million spent to improve irrigation system & flood mitigation, aiming to double the yield of paddy production?" Junz asked

"If we don't see tangible results based on the already invested amount of RM150 million for better yields, then Ministry should really look into the said project to rectify what actually went wrong.

Spending more to implement more programs would not make any sense unless we see results from previous efforts and rectify its problems," Junz explained

Junz proposed Ministry to spend on programs to give special attentions to paddy farmers' skills and methodology, some may need hand-holding assistance and guidance to get them up the skill scale in order to see better yield productions. Ministry should set up special institutions to assist and train the paddy farmers.

Junz Wong who is also DAPSY KK youth chief, reminded Dato Seri Yahya that the proposed Tambatuon Dam in Kota Belud, is openly rejected by the people.

"We must continue to embark on yield improvement strategy on existing acreage before considering other major options. We must step approach to ensure the paddy farmers are ready for significantly bigger investments such as the proposed Tambatuon Dam," Junz elaborated.

However, Public consultations & dialogues with the stakeholders such as the affected villagers & NGO environmentalists MUST be held prior to any proposed project is to be implemented. Junz concluded

  1. Hope to see more positive results from these injection of funds for our local developments. Programs to improve farmer's skills sounds like a good idea and should be considered.
