BRUNEI SULTAN'S EX-WIFE LOVES GAMBLING

Mariam Aziz found going to the casino a form of escape, she told the court. The Sultan of Brunei's former wife often spent time betting during her visits to London and Macau.

"I enjoy gambling, it is central to my social life and I find it a great escape," she said in testimony recorded by High Court Judge Keith Lindblom.

She also said that while she did not want to 'brag' about her wealth, she was 'in a position where most people would consider me to be immensely wealthy'.

She said she went to the casino as part of a group of friends, family members and employees.

She would start with chips of up to 50,000 pounds (RM250,000) and bet about 10,000 pounds (RM50,000) a spin.

"The people who are with me and my staff that are playing will also use these chips. If they win what they do with those winnings is up to them," she said.

Mariam's bodyguard and personal assistant Fatimah Kumin Lim accompanied her to casinos regularly, the court heard.

Fatimah opened credit facilities with five of them in London - Les Ambassadeurs, Aspinalls, Crockfords, The Clermont and Rendezvous. But Mariam made clear that she did not ask her to do so.

Mariam has won a court case against her former PA who stole and sold rare diamonds worth more than £12million (RM60 million).

Fatimah Kumin Lim took the gems belonging to Mariam, 55, and replaced them with worthless replicas, the court heard.

Mariam, who had four children by the Sultan before their 1981 marriage ended in divorce in February 2003, ‘succeeds in full’, a judge at the High Court in London announced. (The Straits Times)
