COMFORTING... Fatimah comforting Patrina and her son Nigel.

SIBU: The late Gaing Kunding, 48, who was killed in a road accident in Mukah on Wednesday, was a very dedicated journalist, and his loss is very much felt by all, particularly those in Mukah, said Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah yesterday.

“The late Gaing was one of the journalists who covered my functions in Mukah and Dalat.

“He had never missed any of my functions, thus, I knew that he is a very dedicated journalist. Besides that, he was a cheerful, helpful and friendly person.

“The late Gaing will always be remembered,” Fatimah told reporters after attending Gaing’s funeral here yesterday.

She said she was shocked after receiving news that The Borneo Post reporter was killed in a road accident.

“The last time I met Gaing was on May 1 when he covered my function in Dalat. However, I never expected that it would be the last time that I will see him.”

Gaing was laid to rest at the Anglican Cemetery in Teku Road yesterday morning.

The ceremony was performed by Reverend Canon Jamal Senada, the Vicar of Saint John’s Anglican Church here.

More than 100 family members, relatives, friends and colleagues from the mass media paid their last respects.

At the ceremony, Fatimah handed over a cheque to Gaing’s wife Patrina Chaong, 43.

“My ministry will help and channel monthly assistance to Patrina as a single mother and his son Nigel Itar, 10.

“It is meant to reduce her burden, and it is the government’s responsibility to help those in need.” (theborneopost)
