SECURITY....Khalid praised
shopping mall operators that took added steps to boost security in their car
parks.
PETALING JAYA : Motorcycle
thefts are the most recorded criminal activities recorded at parking areas of
shopping centres, with 115 cases reported last year.
Deputy Inspector-General of
Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said this was followed by 44 cases of sexual
violations, robbery without firearms (10) and eight case of snatch theft.
“From January to June this
year, there were 54 cases of motorcycle thefts, 17 cases of sexual violation,
six cases of robbery without firearms and four cases of snatch thefts,” he told
reporters after a dialogue session with representatives of Complexes Management
Association (PPK) at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre here today.
The dialogue session was
attended by more than 300 PPK members who discussed the issue of security at
shopping centres and the measures taken to reduce crimes.
Khalid said shopping centre
operators should give emphasis on the importance to raise the level of security
in such areas as an effort to fight criminal incidents around shopping centres,
especially at the parking area.
He said regular sessions
should be held with shopping centre managements to channel the latest
developments on security at shopping centres.
Khalid said shopping centre
operators had been urged to emulate the initiative taken by the Sunway Pyramid
shopping centre in its effort to improve security in the parking areas.
“With 200 panic buttons and
more than 400 closed circuit televisions (CCTV) installed in parking lots
complemented by security guards on motorcycles and bicycles, it gives added
confidence to the public.
At the dialogue, Khalid said
shopping centre operators welcomed the proposal of Home Minister Datuk Seri
Hishammuddin Hussein to station voluntary personnel such as People’s Volunteer
Corps (Rela) members at shopping centres. (Bernama)
