MASwings has targeted a
total passenger volume of 1.6 million for 2013. The company is optimistic that
the target can be achieved with the signing of the framework agreement on the
Bangsamoro will increase their number of passengers.
"When we want to open
certain destinations, safety and security is one of the determining factors for
us," said Sauqi Ahmad the Chief Commercial Officer MASwings during the
press conference for the launching of MASwings 5th Anniversary Promotional
Fares.
He said with the new
development (the peace accord in South Phillipines) it will be good business
not to just MASwings but also to other airlines operating in the
Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA)
region.
A wholly-owned subsidiary of
national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS), MASwings' further expansion into the
BIMP-EAGA region will shed its image as just a rural airline for Sabah and
Sarawak.
"We have so far reached
Bandar Seri Bangawan, Tarakan and Pontianak. We aimed to transform ourselves
from being just a domestic operator to becoming an active regional
player," he said.
MASwings is planning to
mount new route in Philippines that will start flying beginning the first
quarter of 2013.
"Puerto Princesa is one
of the destinations that we are looking into but this is subject to approval
from the Ministry of Transportation." Shauqi believes this new
destination, well-known for its underground river, is a good opportunity for
people to experience new tourist destinations.
Before that, MASwings, has launched the 5th Anniversary Promotional
Fares.
The offer is valid from 17
October 2012 until 24 October 2012 for a travel period from 19 October 2012
until 31 March 2013, covering journeys on the Sandakan, Tawau, Kota Kinabalu,
Lahad Datu and Miri routes.
According to MASwings
sources, the airline started operations in October 2007 with 450 flights per
week covering airports in Sabah and Sarawak, and has now reached close to 940
flights per week. - Insight Sabah
