HELD for the first time in
1999 in conjunction with the UMS convocation day Tamu Gadang is one of the
highlights of University Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Tun Juhar, who is also the
Chancellor of University Malaysia Sabah, officiated the launch of this year's
14th Tamu Gadang.
This year's Tamu Gadang will
last 8 days, starting from the 17th till the 24th October 2012. Over 15,000 UMS
students, their families and the general public will be able to shop for gifts
and souvenirs, clothing, accessories and many more at the tamu. 89 booths are
rented out to 97 local businesses, which also include a Perodua section and the
KKFM radio broadcast booth.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rosazman
Hussin, 52, Head of Ethnography & Development Research Unit said the
organisers expect a lot of people from Kota Kinabalu and other districts in
Sabah to visit the tamu this year. He also hopes that the event will help the
local tamu participants renting the booths earn some profit.
He added, besides being an
event that celebrates the graduates' success after years of hard work, the tamu
also serves as a platform for the university to showcase their research
findings through the Academic and Research Exhibition. The exhibition will also
put on display the university's many achievements to the visitors.
According to Deputy
Vice-Chancellor (Student and Alumni Affairs), Dr. Kasim Md Mansur, much success
has been achieved by UMS students at the national as well as the international
level since the establishment of UMS in 1994.
He said amongst the
achievements is the success of Jufazli Shi Ahmad from the School of Social
Science, who not only received the Young Historian Award but also won the Best
Debater award in the Prime Minister's Cup competition on the 10th of October.
Other achievements, Kasim
added, were the 2 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals won by UMS students at the
World Championship of Performing Art Competition held in Hollywood, Los Angeles
in June this year. In July, 13 students took part in the 12th Yeosu
International Youth Festival in Yeosu, South Korea, with their performance of a
local traditional Sabahan dance and the "Malaysia Truly Asia" dance.
3 UMS students were also
chosen to represent Malaysia in the World Universities Taekwondo Championship
in Puchoen, Korea. Most recently, UMS students who participated in the Student
in Free Enterprise (SIFE UMS) Programme were selected to represent the country
in the World Cup Competition held in Washington D.C. America after emerging
champions in the national-level championship last month in September.
Meanwhile, back home, the
UMS uniformed body was crowned the parade champion recently on the 6th of
October held in conjunction with Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin's, official
birthday celebration.
2nd year students, Ainaa and
Mahani, who are the student representatives for their respective schools and
for the university will attend the UMS
convocation this year for the first time.
As two of the 28 student representatives in UMS
Kota Kinabalu, they provide a liaison between more than 15 thousand students in
the campus and the management. They reckon having this responsibility has led
to a deeper understanding of the difficulties that the students face in their
studies.
Both students look forward to attending the convocation
ceremony as they have friends who are graduating and are very excited for them. They said they couldn’t
wait for their turn to be called on stage on their own convocation day. (Insight
