SANDAKAN: The Federal
Government has allocated RM70 million to upgrade the Sandakan Airport, said
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.
He said the project involved
the expansion of the terminal building to give comfort to the passengers.
The scope of the project
included expanding the terminal size to 3,000 square metres, upgrading the
departure and arrival halls, immigration check-point, baggage scanning area,
mechanical and electrical system, full air-conditioning the terminal and
increasing the parking area.
"It will start as soon
as possible this year. The project will be ready in 18 months," he said,
after a working visit, Saturday. Kong said the project was needed as the
airport handled 820,000 passengers last year or an increase of 5.8 per cent
from 2011 and was set to further grow in future.
On the latest development on
the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), he said the Government was
sensitive to the matter and discussions were on-going with the relevant
parties.
Also on hand were Deputy
Transport Minister, Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri, Deputy Minister in the Prime
Minister's Department Datuk V K Liew, MAB Managing Director, Tan Sri Bashir
