THE 25th Sabah Sport Awards, the premier honours event in the sporting calendar, is set to take place this Friday at the Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort.

Formed jointly by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Sabah Shell Petroleum Company and Sabah Sport Council (SSC), the landmark occasion will be held to recognise the achievements of Sabah’s sportsmen and women for the year 2011 and 2012.

"The Sabah Sport Awards are the highest state-level honours accorded to best-performing athletes, coaches, officials and associations for their contribution and achievements to sports at both national and international levels," said newly appointed Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Haji Tawfiq Abu Bakar Tintingan yesterday.

Head of State, Tun Juhar Mahiruddin has been named the guest of honour to grace the prestigious event, he added.

According to Tawfiq, as in previous ceremonies, the highly anticipated event will bestow special honours to professional athletes and sport officials in 14 categories, with the presentation of the state sportsman and sportswoman award being the main feature for the night.

Among the award categories include the Most Promising Sportsman and Sportswoman, Leadership in Sports, Sports Laureate; Best-performing Men and Women Teams, Awards for Men and Women Paralympic Athletes; Best Sports Association, Best Coach and Special Sport Awards.

In addition, awards for best sports journalists for English, Malay,Chinese language and electronic media will also be included.

"The selection committee, headed by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Datuk Suzannah Liaw has prepared the full list of nominees and winners of the Sabah Sport Awards, which will only be revealed on May 17," Tawiq said

Formerly an annual event, Tawfiq said the state-level sports awards will take place once every two years to ensure athletes are rewarded with incentives to improve their performance and motivation towards excellence

"Previously, when the awards ceremony was held on a yearly basis, it was difficult to accurately measure the achievements of athletes because of the short time frame and lack of competitive events which may not reflect their true performance in their respective fields," he said

Based on this observation, Tawfiq said the ministry has agreed that two years would be sufficient to provide a better evaluation of the performance of athletes as major sporting events such as the SEA Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games are held between two and four years.

"Successful athletes will be rewarded with annual cash incentives to motivate them to improve their performance," he told reporters during the press conference.

In his speech, Tawfiq commended Sabah Shell for their longstanding support of the Sabah Sports Award, and their role in assisting the development of sports in the state.

Shell Malaysia Senior Manager for Government Relations Datin Lucy Irene Yong presented a mock cheque worth RM 30,000 for the award ceremony this Friday.

Among officials present during the press conference include Assistant Minister Masiung Banah, Sport Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary Penyuki Matta; SSC Director Abdul Rahman Laman as well as Sabah Sports Board Acting General Manager Terrance Pudin. (Insight Sabah)
