THE GROWTH of social media on the internet and smart phones has put unlimited information within reach of everyone in possession of these devices.

This has worrisome possibilities, which prompt Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman to advise users to be cautious and discerning when retrieving information from these sources.

“I  know, the social media are a preferred means for youth to express their views and opinions. Used wisely, I believe they have a positive impact by way of interactive communication,” said the Chief Minister at the Likas Sports Complex on the occasion of the 2013 Youth Day yesterday.

“Nevertheless, youths must exercise caution in using their prerogative, and be shrewd in filtering out distorted, fabricated, deceitful, slanderous and defaming information,” he told the gathering.

Sabah Youth Council President Kevin T P Lim also took the opportunity to address the issue. He said, “The youths should be wise to evaluate any information that  they find in the social media, especially on Facebook and blog sites whose veracity may be doubtful.”

"Do not rely on such sites as your sole source of information and accept whatever that is published as the gospel truth. The youth should be astute in assessing the information they retrieve,” he said.

“On the other hand, leaders should respond promptly to any issue. By being transparent and ever ready to disseminate clear and concise information, they can overcome problems before they cause irreparable damage to society.”

Three awards were given out to acknowledge the good work of volunteers at the Youth Day ceremony.

The Premier National Youth Award was given to the Young Malaysians Movement which carries a prize of RM10,000. The State’s Male Youth Icon Award went to Malaysian Scout Association’s Alex Dennis, 28, while Halimah Abdul Rahman, 40, from the Sabah Puteri Islam Movement received the Female Icon Youth Award. The two winners of the Youth Icon Awards received RM3,000.00 each.

A three-day long Youth Festival was also held in conjunction with this year’s Youth Day celebration. The festival was organised by the Sabah Youth Council (MBS) from 17th to 19th May.

The programs throughout the festival this year encompass ten segments consisting of Human Capital, Volunteerism, Career, Skills and Entrepreneurship, Healthy Living and the Green Carnival. There are also special displays showing 50 years of Malaysia, and tourism sector’s Visit Malaysia Year 2014 Promotional exhibition. (Insight Sabah)
