THE 8TH Sabah International Folklore Festival (SIFF), a colorful event celebrating local and international cultural heritage and arts, will be held from the 25th to the 30th of June this year.
Datuk Seri Panglima Wences Angang, Chairman of the Sabah Cultural Board (SCB), announced this during a press conference held at Sabah Art Gallery Conservation Centre in Kota Kinabalu earlier today.
However, the much anticipated International Folkdance Competition will be missing from SIFF’s calendar of activities this time around. According to Wences, the Sabah Cultural Centre (SCC) in Penampang where the competition normally took place is unavailable as the place is currently undergoing renovation.
He said, although another venue, the National Department for Cultures and Art Auditorium (JKKN) was suggested, this was considered unsuitable as it is not large enough for this purpose. Nevertheless the same auditorium will be used to host this year’s 5th Tugu Budaya Local Dance Competition on the 26th and 27th of June.
Wences disclosed that a total of twenty traditional dance troupes will take part in the Tugu Budaya competition this year. Nine Malaysian groups from primary schools and ten from secondary schools will take part in the competition. The competition’s sole participants from neighboring Indonesia will compete in the secondary school category.
A total of seven troupes from seven countries are expected to participate in this year's International Folk Song and Music Competition. So far four troupes from Sri Lanka, Korea, Indonesia and Brunei have confirmed taking part according to the SCB Chairman.
The competition will be held at 7 pm on June 25th at the JKKN Auditorium. SCB General Manager Datu Rosmadi Datuk Sulai told reporters that a target of 650 audience is expected to turn up on each night of the SIFF competition.
The Sabah International Folklore Festival will also hold its Folk Art Exhibition. It will be held from 9 am to 5 pm on 25th till 30th of June. The public is invited to attend the exhibition at the new Sabah Art Gallery Conservation Centre located next to the Federal Archives Building just off the Penampang Road.
The 4th edition of this exhibition will display various works of art from the Japanese Heritage. Datuk Masidi Manjun, Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, will officially launch the event on June 25th.
There is something for food lovers and handicraft enthusiasts too. The 3rd Sabah Traditional Food and Handicraft Exhibition is located within the compound area of JKKN Sabah. The public will have free access to the area between 5 pm to 9 pm on the 25th till the 27th of the same month.
Tickets to the International Folk Song and Music Competition are priced at RM15 for adults and RM5 for those aged below 18 years old. Those wishing to attend the Tugu Budaya Local Dance Competition need only pay RM10 for adults and RM5 for those under the age of 18.
All SIFF entrance tickets are on sale till the 27th of June at JKKN Sabah from 9 am till 5 pm. JKKN can be reached at +60 88 268836 or 268808 for more information related to SIFF 2013. (Insight Sabah)
