THE VISIT to Pulau Gaya Island on Sunday by the Sabah DAP team proved a fruitful and meaningful trip on further understand the environment and the well being of the people who live off the capital city of Kota Kinabalu.

The team is led by the Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Hiew King Cheu with Edward Ewol Mujie, Dr. Felix Chong Kat Fah, John Lee Kim Seng and Chrispher Chong.

It is just a short speed boat trip of about 10 minutes from KK, and the group landed first in the SMK Pulau Gaya which is a water village style of school built over the sea with a very beautiful and unique environment setting on the beach of Pulau Gaya.

There is still no treated water supply here, and the islanders are depending on small boat to ferry in their daily need of water for cooking, washing and other use. The other source of water is by way hill spring water through the gravity pipes and from the rainfall.

The islanders have to buy the water from the water suppliers who send in the water from KK at a price of RM0.80 per 5 gallons tin. This is very expensive when compared to our water bill in KK which is RM4 for 400 gallons.

There is actually over two thousand local Sabahan live on the island, and without proper and clean water supply, they are not happy at all and said the government has neglected them for not arranging to connect the water to their villages.

The villages said it is only a few kilometers of underwater pipe line to pipe the water to the island, and yet the government still cannot do it.

MP Hiew said he had mentioned and requested in Parliament for the pipe line to be installed and connected to Pulau Gaya but until today there is no action at all. The cost of installing the pipe line would not be high and it is a must to bring the islanders the water supply soonest possible.

He urges the Water Supply department to immediately implement the project without further delay, and the local assemblyman Datuk Yong Oi Fah should personally look into this matter.
