THE ACTION by the Custom department to force removal of all the parabolic satellite discs in Sabah has caused many dismay and anger among the people who had installed the facilities to view internal TV program through the satellite service.
The Custom department also warned that it is illegal to install the satellite discs which were imported from China costing RM500 each. The offenders can be punished by imprisonment or fined under the Multimedia Act 1998. The authority had so far removed 193 such installation in one week. The action will continue in the following weeks.
This type of installation is permissible for use only to the Foreign Embassy, Consulates, Hotels with 3-stars rating and above, radio and TV station, Minister and some others given with approval.
The people had complained to the KK MP office and seek the explanation on the action by the Custom Department. MP Hiew explained to them that the Custom office took action to take down and dismantled the satellite disc is because this is imported without import permit and license, there fore it is deem to be illegally imported, equivalent to smuggling.
KK MP Hiew felt that there must be something that the government should be able to help because the installation of the satellite disc should be given a green light through proper channel of application and approval. The main reason is that since the Ministers and the 3-star hotel can be given approval to install, why the people who wish to apply permit to install are not given the approval.
This should be allowed nationwide because some other states can install without trouble. The installation of the parabolic satellite disc to view internal TV program is actually good of the people if they can afford this. The government can also collect license fees and application charges, if they allowed the people who wanted to import and install such facilities. The government should look into this because we cannot have double standard being practice in Malaysia.
The Malaysian TV and Astro not only charged expensive rates but the programs are repeating and repeating, especially old movies. It is cheaper and more entertaining to view international programs through the satellite disc.
The Sabah Minister Yee Mok Chai should move to get this approved and allow the people to use and enjoy the facility.
