Fadilah visiting the scene of the recent landslide at KM20 of the Penampang
Tambunan Road.

DATUK Fadillah Yusof had a
busy schedule on his first visit to Kota Kinabalu as Federal Minister of Works
yesterday. He paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa
Hj. Aman and then Deputy Chief Minister / Minister of Infrastructure
Development, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan before making a quick tour of some
road projects.
He inspected the upgrading
work on the KK-Papar Road at Petagas which is part of the Trans-Borneo Highway
that will connect Sabah with Sarawak through Brunei. He then went to KM20 of
the Penampang–Tambunan Road, scene of a recent landslide that disrupted traffic
between Kota Kinabalu and the interior towns of Sabah.
Speaking to reporters who
followed him to the landslide site he said that the landslide occurred
because there was no ‘proper construction practice’ on the part of
the Public Works Department, the concession contractors and developers in
general.
He said that in the future,
the Public Works Department has to form a team of qualified personnel who will
be able to conduct risk assessments and lay down ground rules for good
construction practices. He called for a standard construction procedure which
will be part of the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that contractors and
developers must strictly adhere to.
Apart from good work
practices in general, he also advised contractors and developers to be mindful
of good governance, calling it a 'social responsibility' to ensure good ethics
in in construction works. He considered the hiring of skilled workers as part
of good governance.
He warned contractors and developers that his
Ministry would take legal action against those who carry out their works
without concern for public safety.
Datuk Fadillah also said
that his Ministry is considering upgrading more roads in Sabah by adding more
carriageways to ease traffic flow. This
road expansion project is necessary to meet the growing needs of road users in
Sabah,“ he said. (Insight Sabah)
