  7. The Sabah Youth Council (SYC) wants a study to be conducted to analyse the 'mismatch' of data on youths in the State.

Its President, Kevin Lim, said the study would be timely to address unemployment among youths.

"An observation on the existing job market shows youths in Sabah are still faced with challenging odds in seeking employment. Rapid changes in information technology and the diverse needs of employers make it tough for new graduates to compete for jobs.

"Furthermore, creation of jobs in the private and public sectors is not in tandem with the number of fresh graduates flooding the market.

"This not only creates competition but also contributes to unemployment.

Therefore, a study should be done to analyse the 'mismatch' of data so that youth graduates in the State can have better opportunities for employment," said Kevin.

The Council believes the potential of every individual should be nurtured from birth and their talents polished.

SYC is greatly concerned about the welfare of youth graduates in both urban and rural areas who are forced to compete for employment opportunities.

Meanwhile, SYC also called for the creation of a special institution dedicated for the development of youths in the State.

Kevin said this is to prevent any leakage of authentic information and so it can be channelled directly to youths.

He said the Government had allocated RM320 million to implement various activities including entrepreneurship training and leadership programmes at the state and district levels.

"However, results from the 13th general election showed that youths, especially those living in urban areas, were not aligned with the Government's aspiration. "Penetration of information through social media and Facebook worsened the whole situation. "Therefore, a special institution is needed so that youths can be equipped with training and skills to ensure their roles and responsibilities to help develop the country can be understood clearly and not so easily distorted by unverified information," said Kevin.

He said youth leaders should also be given accreditation and their views be taken seriously when conducting data studies for their development.

Towards this end Kevin also hoped that youths with good qualifications would be considered for appointment to local councils because they possess the potential to be a driving force or instrument to achieve development and implement government policies.
