WHY CONTROL CHICKEN IMPORT QUOTA?

DAP Sabah State Assistant Secretary, Junz Wong said upon visiting the whole salers, suppliers, agents and retailors, they have found out that the supply of chicken is not meeting market demands.

This is mainly due to a new import practice imposed approximately three months back whereby suppliers in Sabah can hardly import frozen chicken from foreign importers.

One random supplier commented, when being interviewed by DAPSY KK team, he used to import at least 8 containers for the past 10 over years but now his company was only allowed to import 1 container.

It was believed that the relevant departments had stringent the import quota and made it difficult for approval.

Thus causing the prices of local frozen chicken to rise drastically since July 2011 from averagely RM7 per kilogram to Rm11 per kilogram.

The prices had been hovering around RM7 - RM7.50 since 2010 till July 2011 which is deemed reasonable pricing by many when imports of foreign chickens are imported without much constraints.

Many believe if the problem is unresolved quickly, the prices will continue to rise drastically to RM12 per kilogram as the festive seasons are approaching.

Junz Wong, who is also DAPSY Youth Chief would like to ask Government and relevant authorities to come clean with this issue. What is actually going on?

The fact that chicken prices is expensive now, what action plans our government has to cope with this situation?

DAP Sabah call for government to explain clearly to rakyat what actually was the reason for import quota control.
