TAMU GROUND OR BURIAL GROUND?

THE Tamu ground in Sook Township is in need of some urgent attention on its infrastructure and facilities. This was disclosed to the Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Hiew King Cheu during his visit to the Interior districts of Sabah last Sunday. Together with the MP were Sabah DAP Interior chief Dr. Benjamin Yapp, his deputy Philip Voon and DAP members.

The team inspected the Tamu ground in the Sook Township and the people there welcome them and had discussed some matters concerning the area. They complained that the Tamu ground needs attention from the government and the district office to upgrade the facilities which includes the wooden tables used for selling goods, the pavements, and the road surrounding the Tamu ground.

The wooden tables are broken and no longer stable to be used to display the goods, and these looks ugly. The roads here are filled with pot holes and needed to be patched up.

Dr. Benjamin Yapp said that it is a pity that until now the Tamu ground is not upgraded by the district office and left at a poor stage. He added that we are in the 21st century now, but looking at the condition, it is definitely reflected that there is no modernization of the area and the people here are still living in the old ways.

The facilities of the township are also very backwards, and we still can see wooden huts selling goods in town. The government has not been putting in much effort to upgrade the facilities and the standard of living. This is especially so when compared with other towns in Sabah, the Sook Township had not improved in many ways since the past 25 years.

The people here did not see much development as expected, and there are not many activities on improving the local economy. The town remains as it was many years ago. If without the oil palm plantation here, the town would hardly survive, claimed one of the shop operators who had stayed there for many years.

Dr. Benjamin further expressed that the government should put in more effort to develop the area and bring in more programs to help the agriculture products down stream and processing. This will encourage the people here to plant and to work towards a higher income. The place is poor and we want immediate action on some form of industries to be brought in here.
