Shafie Apdal refuses to discuss controversial Item in Minutes of Cabinet meeting.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno vice president Shafie Apdal has taken the stand that he doesn’t have to respond to media queries on the Cabinet meeting last Wednesday which reportedly refused to confirm an Item on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) in the Minutes of the previous week’s meet.

The meeting on Wednesday before last, reportedly approved a RM3 billion cash-injection for 1MDB, a government-owned strategic investment company which has since chalked up RM42 billion in debts.

“Where did you get that?” asked Shafie who is the Rural and Regional Development Minister. “I don’t have to respond.”

The media caught up with him on the sidelines of the 49th MARA Day celebrations in Kuala Lumpur.

He also downplayed the significance of a March 8 meeting of Umno divisional chiefs with party President, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

“It’s a normal meeting,” he claimed. “If there are perception issues, they can be fixed so that there’s less confusion.”

The March 8 meeting, according to widespread speculation in the media, would be on a wide range of issues including the 1MDB scandal, and a New York Times report which apparently tarnished the image of the late Abdul Razak, Najib’s father and the second Prime Minister. (Free Malaysia Today)
