LAPTOP SHOULD GO TO POOR STUDENTS

MANY PEOPLE in Kota Kinabalu had approached the KK MP office to file in their complaints on the distribution of the 1- Malaysia computer laptop given free through the Sabah Ministry of Human Resources and Information Technology. They said this is carried out in total disorder and caused much anger and waste of time.

The distribution of the laptops were carried out without proper arrangement and planning that in returns created a total chaos and upset many people who had waited in long queue for hours. The confusion basically is on the system of approval and who is entitled.

The officers who were distributing the laptop did not had a clear instruction to whom the computers to be given and entitled. It is learnt that some families actually took four laptops home in one go. The recipients must be a voter in the constituency to qualify. The recipients must have an approval letter given by the ministry and this is only applicable to poor students only.

KK MP Hiew said the ministry should have a proper planning to distribute the laptops with proper application procedure and approval criteria and this must follow the original objective of the concept set on the distribution of the 1-Malaysia computers.

It is seen now many who are not entitled were given the laptop while those in need did not have the chance. The secondary school students can’t get one, but older people who can’t operate computer were given the laptop, later the laptops were sold at a low price. Some even came without prior approval also being given one piece.

The 1-Malaysia free laptop program is originally put up to benefit the poor school students, but now in Kota Kinabalu these laptops are being given to every one, and many students did not have the chance.

The distribution is carried out in the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Constituency which covers Luyang, Likas, and Api Api. The money for these laptops is believed coming from the KK MP Hiew King Cheu’s Parliamentary allocation for the constituency which he as the opposition MP was not given the authorities to make use of it.

The 1-Malaysia Computers program is aiming at providing computers to the poor students in the country, but many abuses had occurred. The program stated that there is 500 computers to be given out for every state constituency and the family entitled to must be earning less then RM3,000 without a computer at home, and there must be one student studying between Form 1 to Form 5. One family only entitled to one computer only.

The Assistant Minister Datuk Azizah has also issued a statement asking the family to return the extra computers they have taken home. Hiew said this is a typical proof that the ministry had done a very bad job and had abused the peoples’ money.

They must revert the distribution process and let the secondary school to handle this and not by the ministry. The school would be able to handle this well to benefit the poorer school students.
