by : Hiew King Cheu

Tree planting in progress.

The MCA Luyang State Assemblyman YB Dr Hiew King Cheu has today invited the Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment YB Datuk Pang Nyuk Min, and the Kota Kinabalu City Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir to come to the playground in Jalan Mawas, Taman Foh Sang to plant 20 numbers of the famous flower trees in Sabah.

This is a flower tree which bears three type of color, red, pink and white, and it is called Tabebuia Pellida, or Trumpet tree or nick named as Sabah Sakura.

Datuk Pang Yuk Ming welcomes the idea of planting more trees especially in the city area where there is more population and high air pollution. He commented during the tree planting event that as the assistant minister in an important ministry taking care of the environment for the people, he would support the people to plant more trees and to create an environment which is conducive for healthy living.

He said by planting more of these “Sabah Sakura” tree will definitely add on to a greener environment and at the same time when it flowers it will beautify the whole city. Eventually, this will help to promote tourism for Kota Kinabalu and Sabah as a whole.

KK City Mayor Datuk Abidin thanks the Luyang Assemblyman YB Hiew for taking the initiative to plant more trees in the Luyang area, and he said DBKK will support anyone who wishes to plant trees in the city.

According to the Operation Director of DBKK Joannes Solidau who was present, informed YB Hiew that DBKK has set a target to plant 10,000 trees per year in Kota Kinabalu area with its Landscape Department.

The main objective is “to support and to love green concept and environment awareness”. Mass participation from the community in the city including primary and secondary schools, higher learning centres, resident committees, NGOs, and city coordinators are all welcomed to help to plant more trees in the city. A joint effort will ensure an earlier success in the tree planting campaign.

A total of various spices of trees planted by DBKK according to the record since 2006 to 2012 are shade trees – 55,800, palm trees – 5,200 and shrubs – 3,310,000, all together 3,371,000 trees.

Anyhow, Hiew said he has a vision that the Luyang area can be turned into a sea of Tabebuia Pellida – Sabah Sakura. This can be materialized when thousand of such trees are being planted and bear flowers together.

We can do it when everybody contributes a small effort. The ADUN Luyang office will continue to arrange to plant more of this flower tree with DBKK.
