SEVERAL top Maritime & Fishing as well as Hospitality & Tourism graduates of BEST International College will get to do their apprenticeship in Holland and other international destinations as a reward for their achievements.

Other graduates from the inaugural batch of 69 will be placed at various destinations in the country, in particular Langkawi for the Maritime & Fishing sector, disclosed BEST Chairman, Datuk Haji Safari Manan.

In his speech at the inaugural graduation of BEST students at Kolej Integrasi Ilmu, Felda Sahabat on Sunday night, Haji Safari said the other Hospitality and Tourisn graduates would continue with their apprenticeship at BEST’s new training hotel in Sandakan.

Felda Director-General, Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Wahab was the guest of honour at the ceremony and he later presented the certificates to the graduates. Also present was Pembangunan Samudera CEO, Kamarul Baharin Osman.

According to Haji Safari BEST education partners, De Ruyter Maritime Institute and ROC Zeeland, both from Holland, had agreed to accept the students who had excelled in their Level 1 certificate.

“This is a big honour indeed for us, as well as a challenge for our students, as they have received good comments while doing their industry training.

“The students will now move on to the next level so that they can get more exposure to make them even better workers and be able to deliver what is expected of them,” he said.

Those who undertook the Maritime course will get two stints of international sea training lasting six months each and two classroom stints of three months each.

The Hospitality students will do four days of training on the job and two days of classroom activities weekly for a period of 18 months.

BEST is a training organization undertaking the development of human capital to become highly competent and skilled manpower in the global maritime and hospitality industries with a special focus on Sabah.

The undertaking is a collaborative initiative between the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and Pembangunan Samudera (Sabah) Sdn. Bhd, a Sabah-based private sector corporation, towards supplementing socio-ecocomic development under the Sabah Development Corridor.

Haji Safari said that the specialized courses were tailored-made for the children of Felda settlers and staff, but will also benefit other students in the near future, when the college opens its doors to all Malaysians in Sabah.

At present, the second batch of students is undergoing their industry-based training, while the third batch has begun centre-based training.

The students, mainly form five school leavers, were made to undergo an intensive two-month foundation in English language proficiency while doing their centre-based training.

“Many if not all of them could only offer a smattering of English, but today, they speak well in the language and this will ensure that they can work anywhere,” added Haji Safari.

The emphasis on English which is the recognized lingua franca in both the maritime and hospitality sectors, is to ensure that the students attain the necessary communication levels in both areas.

Representatives from De Ruyter and ROC Zeeland was also present at the graduation.

At the graduation, parents and students were informed that five of their fellow graduates had to give the occasion a miss as they were stranded on board a fishing vessel close to the Natuna Islands near Kuching due to bad weather.
