'WAYWARD' GIRL, 14, KILLED BY DAD AND SISTERS

A MAN in Malad, Mumbai in India killed his 14-year-old daughter because he feared the girl's 'wayward' lifestyle would lead to his social ostracism.

Agyaram Jaiswal, 45, who runs a pickle store, killed the girl, identified only as Preeti, with the help of her two elder sisters in another shocking case of honour killing.

Last Thursday, neighbours saw a boy from the locality with her in her house and told her elder sisters. They beat her up while the boy escaped.

Agyaram accused Preeti of maligning his reputation and used the cable of a sewing machine to strangle her to death.

He took the body to a nearby hospital, claiming that Preeti had committed suicide. However, the post-mortem showed the real cause of the death, forcing Agyaram and his daughters to confess.

In his statement to the police after his arrest on Friday, Agyaram said he was fed up of the neighbours mocking his family because of Preeti’s 'wayward' ways but didn’t intend to kill her.

"She loved making friends and often spent my hard-earned money on buying gifts for boys. I warned her several times but she refused to change."

Agyaram said that whatever he did was to "save the family’s name from being tarnished". "I just lost my mind when I was told about Thursday’s incident. I've had enough of people poking fun at her flirtatious ways."

The boy who was with Preeti in her house told the police that they had known each other for over a month after meeting at her father’s shop.

"I went to her house to borrow some money and suddenly we heard a commotion outside."

"She helped me escape from the rear window of the top storey of her house. I saw her getting thrashed by her sisters as I escaped," he told the police.

Police have charged Agyaram and his two daughters aged 16 and 18 with murder and with misleading the police by providing false information. They have been remanded until wednesday. (Agencies)
