SINGLE mothers nowadays are
no longer like single mothers in the 90s. The fate of single mothers now are
being taken care of and they are more independent and able to stand on their
own, especially those in the urban area.
But many of the single
mothers in rural or more remote villages have ‘difficult life’ by living on day
to day. This is due to the fact that they still depend on the produce of their
planted crops only. Most of the single mothers do not have a steady job not
because they don’t have the necessary qualifications but they are bound by
their commitment towards their family members especially those that have
toddlers to take care of.
Actually a lot of them can
acquire additional income if there is availability of courses in their
villages. These courses include clothes sewing, embroidery, beauty and
cosmetics, as well as courses in handicrafts that is mat weaving, baskets and
crafts that derive from rattan, bamboo or plastic material. Upon completion of
the respective courses, they can use the skills to supplement extra income and
not just to depend on their village produce.
Presently the problem that
arises is the courses are always being held in the rural and sub-urban area,
and in addition also the government seems less interested in sending trainers
to help these single mothers. Instead the government urged them to travel to the urban area to attend courses
that is available.
If this is so then the
single mothers will be struggling to leave their homes to attend the said
courses especially those having small children. If the trainers can come to the
villages, these single mothers can attend courses without trouble because they
will not be leaving their family behind.
