SPLIT.....Days
of thunder for Tom and Katie? It's splitsville for them.
SUPERSTAR Hollywood couple
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are going to divorce court, People magazine has
reported.
"This is a personal and
private matter for Katie and her family," her attorney Jonathan Wolfe told
the magazine. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her
daughter's best interest."
Tom and Katie married in an
elaborate ceremony in Italy in 2006 and they have one daughter together,
six-year-old Suri. He was previously married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman,
with whom he has two children.
Tom, who turns 50 this year,
is one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors, although his last movie, the musical
Rock Of Ages, failed to generate critical or box-office buzz. Katie, 33, rose
to fame on the TV series Dawson's Creek and starred in the blockbuster movie
Batman Begins.
Katie filed for divorce in
New York City, said a long-time attorney for Tom yestersday. "Tom is very
saddened by that, and right now he is concentrating on the kids," LA-based
attorney Bert Fields told Reuters. Fields said he was not representing Cruise
in the divorce but was speaking as a friend. He wouldn't give a reason for the
filing, saying only that "Tom wants to be very private".
Meanwhile, the Internet has
been buzzing with conspiracy theories ranging from Katie's alleged
"marriage contract" to Tom which apparently pays her millions, to
Tom's serial divorce rate following the fact that both his ex-wives divorced
him when they were 33. This was Katie's first marriage.
Tom and Katie's relationship
has been one of Hollywood's most high-profiled affairs, in no small part due to
his Scientology beliefs, his personal attack on Brooke Shields and TV reporter
Matt Lauer, and when he jumped on the couch on Oprah Winfrey's chat show to
declare his love for Katie.
