TRANSFORM KK KAMPUNG AIR PASAR MALAM

By: DAP MEDIA

THE Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Dr. Hiew King Cheu said today that it is his responsibility as the respected representative to assist to resolve the issue arising in the KK Kampong Air Pasar Malam between the shop/business owners and the hawkers in the Pasar Malam (night market).

He has been busy arranging with the various authorities and seeking the DBKK and its Mayor to work out a meeting for all concern to resolve the matters arising especially from the recent fire that gutted a five storey shop and affecting two hotels next to it.

Dr. Hiew commented that he sees the problem there as serious and he hopes the matter can be resolved amicably between the people there, and a solution on a ‘win-win’ basis must be reached through a meeting with the Mayor and DBKK along with other authorities like JKR, Bomba and Health Department etc.

On the request made by the hawkers in the Pasar Malam asking to be included in the meeting with the DBKK, the MP said he had included them to be represented by their committee to put forward their views during the meeting. He said a meeting like this is necessary and in fact is long overdue.

Dr. Hiew said for the Pasar Malam is timely to have a new look and a new setting to modernize the area. We need to rearrange certain thing there in order that the hawkers can have a better environment to do business and at the same time to attract more customers and tourists to come to the Pasar Malam to do their shopping.

The improvement in this area is needed immediately especially the festive seasons are approaching. Some hawkers told the MP that they needed power supply arrangement instead of using generators, poles to fasten their canvas, more and brighter street lights, benches, proper arrangement of stalls, and even adding toilets near this place.

Hiew said all the requests from the hawkers and property/business owners can be put forward in the meeting and he hope DBKK can listen and act upon on it, a win-win solution must be able to be reached by all. He hopes the people would not continue to blame him for not taking action.
