SABAH DAP and PKR conducted a joint visit to the Kg. Ulu Putatan in the new district of Putatan upon request from the kampong folks to look at the various infrastructure problems.

The group is led by the DAP Tanjong Aru Branch Chairman cum Medical Advisory Bureau Chief, Dr. Felix Chong Kiat Fah with the State Vice Chairman cum Local Government And Housing Bureau Chief, Edward Ewol Mujie and Assistant Publicity Secretary John Lee Kim Seng. From the PKR was Christopher Chong and members.

It is true that the whole of the Kg Ulu Putatan area is in need of immediate attention of the authorities to improve the condition there. The Kampong is clogged up with water which cannot be drained effectively into the river and the drains are no longer there but filled with grass, weeds, garbage and dirty smelly water.

There was no drain clearing for quite some time now expressed by one of the kampong dweller. He lives just next to a dirty drain and he said that during the hot weather the smell is unbearable. When it rains, the whole place is flooded.

It is seen on site that the whole area has no proper drainage system and the water is all stagnant and clogged up and became blackish in color. Dr. Chong felt sorry to see the poor stage of the kampong and worried about the hygienic aspect of the kampong because he noticed that there were no sanitary and hygienic toilets in the houses. There is no proper sewerage system and septic tank in most of the houses. He said that the environment is bad and it was really to his surprise to see the poor condition.

Furthermore, there are some foreigners families had moved in to stay in the Kampong now. This will present a future threat to the local kampong folks if this situation is not put under control and eradicated, said one of the residents.

The government has totally neglected the well being of the kampong folks here and had not put in a little effort to upgrade their living condition. The people living here are not rich people but just the average wage earners, their many requests to the government had been forgotten and no action taken. They said when the BN wants them to vote, and then they will come with their goodies. What happen after that, back to square one?

For the Kg Ulu Putatan, Dr. Felix calls on the government to immediately start to carry out drain cleaning, open up the drain into the river to drain the smelly stagnant water. There should be regular garbage trucks to come to the kampong to clear the rubbish from the garbage collection centre (if there is one). The Putatan district council should implement a proper sewerage system for the purpose of treating all the foul sewerage from the houses.
