X-ANTS Magic isn’t any cyber
game. It is a cheap natural insect repellant made from coffee, star anise (a
spice) and flour. And it is the invention of five school boys of Bandaraya
secondary school which won them four prizes including the coveted Chief
Minister’s Award at the 7th Sabah Invention and Design Exhibition (Sindex). The
gold medal also came with 700 ringgit ($228).
Azmi Othman, Fadzil Alliyas,
Andrew Marimus, Mohd Saiful and Felix Luhan spent five months to develop their
X-Ants Magic. Their entry beat more than 400 other submitted by about 1,000
school children.
And they spent only 10
ringgit to produce about 1,000 grammes of the repellent which is effective in
keeping ants and other insects away. The boys plan to sell their product in
their school for between 1.50 and 3 ringgit for a bottle of between 125gm and
250gm for a start.
"This program is the
best platform to discover young talents and creativity in order to create an
innovative society that will be the driving force of transformation in Sabah,”
said Dr Yee Moh Chai, a deputy chief minister. Dr Yee, who is minister of
resource development and information technology, represented his chief minister
at the prize-giving.
Sindex is organized by the
government science and technology unit, the chief minister’s department and the
Rotary Club of Sabah. (Insight Sabah)
