POWER FAILURE IN QE1

CHECKING... Hiew and Edward Ewol Mujie visited the SESB sub station No.1.

A MAJOR power failure occurred in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH1) in Kota Kinabalu since yesterday afternoon 3.30pm until today and the cause of the power cut was not yet known.

The Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Hiew King Cheu was informed and alerted by the hospital personal seeking his help. He immediately went for a site inspection in the morning to the sub-station No.1 and found that the SESB staffs and the hospital technical personals were checking the power supply system.

They are still not sure what caused the equipment or cable faults, and said that they will quickly find out the problem and reconnect back the power supply to the hospital.

Meanwhile, MP Hiew visited various part of the hospital especially the specialist building, he saw the patients, doctors, nurses, and visitors were sweating and felling very uncomfortable in the rooms which has no air conditioning, no fan and no ventilation at all. Many places there were no lights and the emergency hall way is totally in darkness. It is very inconvenient to the people here. The more serious aspect is that the power cut may affect the ICU, operation theatres, and the blood banks.

MP Hiew said the hospital should have suitable larger power generators to produce enough emergency power supply to feed every part of the hospital and to all its facilities. The existing small power generators do not have the full capacity to feed all the essential requirements here in QE1.

Therefore, the air conditioners and other power requirement can not function. It will be better to improve and upgrade the stand-by power generators to cater for the new twin towers blocks at one go. There are new operation theatres, ICU and some 600 beds in the new blocks and we cannot afford to take risk to let the patients and every body suffer if there are repeated power cuts at anytime.

All hospital must be given the top priority to ensure there is no power cut or failure. The QE1 case is very unfortunate, and should not occur again. The Ministry of Health must pay particular attention and take special precaution. All the old cables, power switch gears, and controls must be renewed and replaced to ensure their performance.

  4. It is well reputed the quality of the power supply here in Sabah. The hospital management should have a back up power generator in hand as a counter measure to this irregular power cut outs.

  8. Pihak SESB perlu mencari mengenai perkara ini. Namun kita harap DAP tidak menjadikan ini isu mereka semata-mata kerana ini bukannya disengajakan.
