KOTA KINABALU: The crime index in Sabah dropped significantly to about 12.21 percent or 510 cases in the first eight months this year compared to the same period last year, according to State Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib.

He said the number of crime cases fell to 4,040 in the eight-month period this year from 4,550 in the same period last year.

Hamza said the solving rate achieved in the period this year was 47.03 percent, with street crime solving rate recorded at 51.8 percent.

“The statistics have achieved the Key Performance Index (KPI) set under the National Key Result Area (NKRA) and this achievement was a result of cooperation from all parties,” he said at the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) Hari Raya open house at the state police headquarters in Kepayan yesterday.

Among guests at the event were Head of State Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Juhar Mahiruddin and his consort Toh Puan Datin Seri Norlidah R.M. Jasni, State Federal Secretary Datuk Abu Bakar Hassan; Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Khoo, Sabah Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin and Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Datuk Jahid Jahim.

Hamza stressed that close cooperation between the police and the community is important in tackling crimes in the country and give confidence to the people.

He said the crime rate in the state is still under control and manageable.

Meanwhile, Hamza revealed a local man was detained by police in Tawau on Monday for allegedly trafficking in 3.14 kilograms of syabu, which was worth about RM1 million.

He said the suspect, in his 30s, was arrested at the Tawau sports stadium around 9pm on September 10.

“We are still investigating to determine if the suspect was the mastermind and the case has been referred to the State Narcotics Department,” he said.

The arrest followed the detention on August 13 of a foreign man by marine police for alleged smuggling about RM960,000 worth of drugs to Sebatik Island from a neighboring country. (theborneopost)
