PETROLIAM Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is committed to invest around RM45 billion in the upstream and downstream activities of the petroleum sector in Sabah following the discovery of new gas fields offshore.
Starting with one of the downstream initiatives, Project Ammonia Urea Sabah (Samur), Petronas, via Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (PCG), invested RM4.5 billion to add value to the hydrocarbon from the new gas fields offshore, discovered together with its production-sharing partners.
"The new fields will enable Petronas to plan and implement other downstream projects in Sabah and the overall upstream and downstream activities involve an investment of over RM45 billion," said PCG chairman, Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin.
Wan Zulkiflee said this at the groundbreaking ceremony for Project Samur here today. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak officiated the ceremony.
Wan Zulkiflee, who is also Petronas executive vice president, downstream business, said the various activities, especially the downstream projects which were implemented and those in the various stages of implementation, would help boost the growth of oil and gas industry in Sabah.
"In this respect, Petronas is cooperating with the state government to identify suitable companies in Sabah to participate in our projects," he said.
He said their participation in and exposure to the implementation of the various projects would help improve their skills and experience and would open more opportunities for them to participate in the related industries.
"Other than that, we believe these projects would act as catalysts to help in the growth of support services which will bring positive benefits and boost social and economic development like in areas where Petronas operates like Gurun, Kertih, Gebeng and Labuan," he said.
Wan Zulkiflee said Project Samur was expected to create 3,000 to 4,500 jobs in the initial stage of the building of the complex and this would "open opportunities for the qualified local residents".
He said the jobs required certain skills and experience depending on the stages in the implementation of the project.
"In line with the long-term aspiration of the state government on development and production of human capital, Petronas and PCG have adopted proactive and intensive steps to train the workers from Sabah.
"For Project Samur, PCG has placed them at its existing chemical plants for training. They will work for Project Samur when it is fully operational," he said. (BERNAMA)
