VETERAN politician, Datuk Mohd Noor Mansoor said Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) President Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee's loss in the Batu Sapi parliamentary by-election- his first ever defeat in seven elections-is just a minor setback.
The former Finance Minister said looking back at history, Yong was facing similar situation like Berjaya President Datuk Harris Salleh who had lost in two by-elections in Tenom and Sipitang but within six months after that his party won the state election to mark the era of the Berjaya state government.
There were other similar cases even in Semenanjung Malaysia where a leader lost in a by-election but went on to win in the general election.
Yong, a former Chief Minister, had won the parliament seat (Gaya, a combination of the present Kota Kinabalu and Sepanggar parliament constituencies) and state seat (Likas) in 1985, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1999 and 2000 Likas by-election.
Therefore, he said this is not the time for SAPP members and supporters to start having any doubts, instead strive to give fullest support to their leaders, particularly Yong so that SAPP will rise up again.
"I am not really too worried about the Batu Sapi by-election defeat," said Mohd Noor in his first public statement on the issue.
