DAP Sabah State Assistant Secretary, Junz Wong, found the recent announcement of sugar subsidies increase news by Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister lsmail Sabri Yaakob, rather shocking.
BN government has increased the prices of sugar 4 times last year from RM1.45 per Kg to RM2.30 per Kg, citing coping with budget deficit as main reason. Rakyat have suffered then.
“When the global sugar prices had decreased in the past six months, BN government increases sugar subsidies from RM243million to RM563million. What is the rationale behind this move?” Junz asked. Many speculated that it was due to the election funding.
People are probably familiar with how BN directly awarding a highly overpriced contract to a crony and then purchase items back at exorbitant prices or getting a kickback from the crony, in the form of commissions. Perfect examples are IPPs (independent power producing plants) and NFC (National Feedlots Corporation).
“However getting a kickback with the idea of increasing the subsidy even when the price of the raw material has come down is really something new. An illicit outflow of ringgit through an unnecessary subsidy. So now, where is the subsidy actually going?” Junz inquired.
Junz Wong, who is also DAPSY KK Assistant Youth Chief, said the government claims they are giving goodies to the people, but we all know that they are doing that by 'taxing' future citizens by increasing government borrowings, which in return, will have to be borne by the next generation of Malaysians.
Malaysia's deficit will continue to grow worse if so many BN ministers of such similar calibre continues to spend public fund unwisely. People want see a real change in government if ever the country is to survive well in a time of such global competitiveness.
We the rakyat are still waiting for the answer. Give us facts and figures. You owe it to us.
