NEW MP URGED TO REJECT CPP

A Sabah environmental group is asking newly sworn in Batu Sapi MP Datin Linda Tsen Thau Lin to keep her pledge and reject a proposed coal-fired plant (CPP) in the state.

The Sabah Environmental Protection Association (Sepa) wanted Tsen to speak out in Parliament against the 300mW power generation facility to be sited in the Lahad Datu district.

Sepa president Wong Tack said yesterday that Tsen's stand was crucial as the coal plant proponents, Lahad Datu Energy Sdn Bhd, was planning to file an appeal after the environmental impact assessment report was rejected by the Department of Environment in August.

"We hope Tsen will voice in Parliament the views of many Sabahans who are opposed to the coal plant," Wong added.

He said using coal to generate electricity was unnecessary in Sabah which was producing some 30 mil tonnes of oil palm waste a year.

A 300mW biomass-powered plant only requires 16mil tonnes of waste a year to generate that amount of power.

"The 10 oil palm mills at Felda Sahabat scheme alone produce some 14.8mil tonnes of waste." (STAR)
