WHILE NO religion in Malaysia allows same-sex relationship and free sex, action can only be taken against Muslim lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender (LGBT) under the Syariah Criminal Offences Act 1997, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
The offences include prostitution, sodomy and pimping. The authorities also carry out enforcement against lesbians and transvestites.
"The government works closely with state religious authorities and will take action against those who violate the Syariah laws," said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim.
She said problems related to LGBT could lead to other social issues like prostitution, drug abuse and the risk of HIV infection.
Dr Mashitah said the problems related to LGBT could be due to confusion as a result of the unisex lifestyle.
She said "so many things now are unisex, be it clothes, accessories, fashion and hairstyle" that people are confused.
"That is why some feel, despite having male physical attributes, they are actually a woman and vice versa," she told Mohd Nizar Zakaria (BN-Parit).
