SABAH Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Youth Chief, Jafery Jomion has advised purchasers in the state investing in gold to make their purchases from trusted dealers and merchants to avoid from falling prey to a fake gold bar scam.
He related his personal experience in a statement issued yesterday. According to Jomion, his friend from Semporna introduced him to someone who offered a piece of gold bar below the market price.
He was told that the price for the gold bar which weighed more than 1kg was about RM200,000, and negotiable.
His friend even paid the particular vendor a RM1,000 deposit to enable the gold bar to be brought to the city to be assessed for its authenticity and originality.
“I am not sure why a piece of gold bar as such and is supposed to be an expensive investment was sold at a cheap price.
“When the item arrived, I immediately brought it to a gold merchant and I was told that the item was definitely a counterfeit,” he said.
He suspected it to be another ruse to fool purchasers of the precious metal and immediately lodged a report of the scam at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing, urging the police to investigate the case immediately before many others fall prey to it.
According to Jomion, the surface of the counterfeit gold bar was imprinted with ‘GOLD, LM London, 999.9’. The current market price for 999.9 gold is RM205 per gram.
He added it is his social responsibility to inform the public to exercise care when purchasing products offered by unknown people for a song.
“The owner of this item has contacted me asking me to return it to him because he wants to sell it to another buyer.
“I don’t understand why he still wants to convince others that he deals with real gold despite my having proven the item to be otherwise,” he concluded. (theborneopost)
