THE DRAIN wall at Taman Hiburan, Jalan Penampang Lama had collapsed more than three years ago. The residents in the area have complaining to the authorities, Dewan Bandar Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) and Jebatan Kerja Raya (JKR) but their complaints have been falling to deaf ears.
Sabah DAP Local Government and Housing Bureau Chief, Edward Ewol Mujie and his assistant, Stephen Yaman inspected the drain after receiving complaints from the people in the area.
Edward said that mosquitoes are breeding fast in the stagnant water in the drain because the water flow is blocked. The residents also complained that rotten dead rats that got stuck in the drain caused bad odors which are a real nuisance. They are also worried that if it rains heavily eventually their fences and sewerage system at that spot will also collapse and will cause more damages.
The residents said that they have complained to DBKK and JKR several times in the last three years. The officers came to inspect the drain many times and said that they will do something about the problem. Up to now nothing has been done to rectify the problem.
The residents further said that the two government bodies seem to be playing 'ping-pong' and nobody wants to take the responsibility to make good the problem. So it is about time that something has to be done because general election is any time around the corner. It is usually times like this that the government takes simple problems like this seriously.
Edward said that there are many others issues involving infrastructure problems in Penampang like sewerage problems, blocked drains, road pot holes, unfinished and incomplete roads, overgrown grass and trees, blocked fire hydrants, stolen road man-hole covers, broken walkway slabs, rubbish, etc.
It is necessary that DBKK and JKR go on their rounds to check and inspect the area regularly to ensure that the problems are rectified and made good immediately. Their efficiency will definitely make Kota Kinabalu a model and beautiful city to live in. What is the use of the citizens paying taxes and quit rents to the authorities when they are not doing the proper job?
