KETTHA PASSES BLAME TO RURAL MINISTRY

DATUK Seri Peter Chin today disputed a federal audit identifying weak finances in his Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry, and blamed uncontrollable external factors for the Auditor-General’s conclusions.

Chin’s ministry was one of seven federal bodies that will be hauled up by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), after the Auditor-General’s Report for 2010 highlighted their weak financial management.

The others were the Health Ministry; Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry; Transport Ministry; Internal Revenue Board; Customs Department and the Malaysia Stadiums Corporation.

Yesterday, Chin said he will explain his ministry’s position when he meets with the PAC, where he will detail the rural electrification project found to have contributed his ministry’s poor financial situation.

The Auditor-General had identified one instance where RM770,000 was spent to supply power to a single house in a rural area.

Chin said although the financing of the project was handled by his ministry, its execution came under the purview of the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.
