PUTRAJAYA : Checks by the
Election Commission (EC) on the 84 voters who purportedly have the same old
identity card number have found that they are different individuals.
EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul
Aziz Mohd Yusof said this was based on the 12 digits in the identity cards and
verified by the Agency Link-Up System (ALIS) and National Registration
Department (NRD).
“This could have occurred
during the manual data entry as there was no sophisticated system then.
“They have different
12-digit identity card numbers and can’t vote twice due to the indelible ink,”
he said when commenting on a report in Harakah newspaper that 84 voters had the
same old identity card numbers.
On the symbol change for
independent candidates, Abdul Aziz said an EC study found that some symbols had
to be replaced.
For example, the scissors
was changed to a pen as it could become a weapon and the tiger head to a cat
because the tiger is a fierce animal.
“The umbrella was changed to
a raincoat as the umbrella is useful during rain or shine and can be used as a
campaign tactic and brought into restricted areas during election.”
He said that the EC has the
right to determine the appropriate symbols and has listed 30 including a key, a
table, a house, a fish, a boat, an airplane, a watch and a rabbit. (Bernama)
