WEATHER GIRLS IN BIKINIS HIT DRY SPELL

GUANGDONG Television's bikini-wearing weather girls have a hit a dry spell, and the forecast for their fans is dark and gloomy clouds ahead.

"They were inappropriately dressed for the first broadcast and we apologise for that," said Zhou Chun, director of the sports channel at GDTV. The models were hired to be weather girls in bikini during the station's broadcast of the Euro 2012 football championship.

Zhou added that he's already ordered the girls to wear proper sportswear, according to Yangcheng Evening News.

The weather report made its debut last week with two young models in swimwear delivering the forecast for Poland and Ukraine, just before the first game between Poland and Greece. Netizens captured the 60-second clip, posted it on the Internet, and within minutes the video went viral, sparking up an online storm.

Regular TV viewers and football fans that have seen the weather girls have had mixed reactions towards them.

"It's too much! You must do things according to specific occasions and locations, and bikinis have nothing to do with the weather. It's not a playground or a swimming pool!" cried website editor Li Denghui.

But Wang Ming, who works at a trading company, supported the bikini babes. "It was good. It goes well with the football spirit." Zhou Xiaozheng, a sociologist at Renmin University, also added that hosts should wear whatever they like. "Beach volleyball players wear bikinis and they’re on TV. What's the big deal?"

One online survey by the People's Daily showed that just less than half of its 6,940 poll respondents thought that the model idea wasn't so hot. (China Daily)
