GOVT URGED TO CLARIFY LABUAN MP’S POSITION

By : ADRIAN NANDU

LABUAN: Former Member of Parliament for Labuan, Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman, has urged the government to clarify the position of current Member of Parliament, Datuk Yussof Mahal, who has been allegedly declared bankrupt.

Suhaili said this is necessary for the good of Barisan Nasional (BN) as the 13th general election is around the corner and the opposition will exploit the issue.

“The people are questioning whether he (Yussof) is still a qualified Labuan Member of Parliament and the chairman of Labuan Corporation.

“The government must verify his real situation as the opposition might use it as their weapon against BN,” Suhaili said during his Hari Raya open house at his residence on Monday.

“There will be a parliamentary sitting this coming September 24. Unless the government clarifies his real situation, the opposition will attack him during the sitting by claiming that it is illegal for him to sit in the Parliament due to his court case.

“They do not talk about the matter right now. But, we wait and see in this two weeks’ time,” Suhaili said. adding that the opposition would manipulate his case to tarnish the BN’s image too.

Asked about his future plans in politics, he replied, “wait”.

Suhaili, meanwhile, denied he was declared bankrupt.

“I was only charged in court for bankruptcy a year after I completed my two-year term gracefully as Labuan Member of Parliament on February 2008.

“The court then freed me from the case after I won it. But, I still lost all my positions in BN, including as Labuan Umno chief. It is different with his (Yussof) case right now.” (theborneopost)
